This and That for August

Eighty percent of all antibiotics sold in US are used on animals. We eat and become antibiotic resistant; 700K die worldwide each year from antibiotic-resistant infections.

Looking to kill weeds but don’t want a gallon or more?  Take 1TBS dishwashing liquid (no antibacterial ingredient), 1TBS gin, 1TBS vinegar, 1qt hot water.  Mix & put in a hand-spray bottle, and drench the weeds.  Looking to kill plant pests?  Mix 1 tsp vegetable oil, 1 tsp dish soap, and 1 tsp baking soda in a one quart spray bottle and fill with water.  Shake well when using it.

For best results, always grow plants that are native or known to be adapted to your general area.  People who drink vegetable or fruit juice at least three times a week VS less than once a week, are 76% less likely to develop Alzheimer's.

When developing fruit, tomato plants normally keep a constant weight of fruit on the plant.  Picking some of the fruit when the final color is just getting started (i.e. final ripening off the vine), will allow the remaining fruit to become larger.  Ergo, the fewer the tomatoes, the larger they will be. When string bean production begins to slow down, cut off all plant branches 2-3" above where the branches begin.  The plant will then produce new branches, which can provide a second crop.

When growing vegetables in pots, don't use dark colored pots - heat buildup.  Also, don't use regular soil.  It just doesn't act the same way in pots as it did in the yard. Use some sort of potting medium (not garden soil!), and don't put in a bunch of gravel. Gravel leaves less room for your roots in your soil medium and reduces the drainage ability within the pot.  You can mix in compost, but NOT mulch.
