Local election season starts

The month-long period for candidates to file for local offices to be decided in the upcoming May 7 election has begun.

Qualifications to run for local office are as follows:

1) Age - Must be at least 18 years of age.

2) Residence – One year in the state and six months in the district prior to filing deadline.

3) Must be a registered voter at time of election.

As per the Texas Secretary of State Election Calendar, Wednesday Jan. 20, was the first day to file an application for a place on the ballot and the last day to file is on Friday, Feb. 19, at 5 p.m.

There are three city council seats up for election on the city council – Place 3 (Incumbent David Huffman), Place 4 (Incumbent Tim Dale) and Place 5 (Incumbent Sue Hawkins). The terms are for two years.

As of the end of the day Tuesday, Rick Rajotte and Jack Anderson had filed for Place 3. Dale and Kellye Cooper have signed up for Place 4 and Hawkins for Place 5.

For the school board, the trustees up for re-election this year are Buddy Blue and Ezeal McGill. Terms are for three years.
