Beware of illegal title transactions
Titus County Sheriff's Office periodically receives complaints that a victim has been defrauded resulting from illegal transactions involving the sale, transfer of vehicle and motor vehicle titles.
In some instances, the unwary sellers have sold a vehicle with a verbal agreement for continued payment and have inadvertently given the negotiable title to a buyer without following appropriate steps to sell a vehicle while retaining a lien on the vehicle to ensure the seller receives full payment.
In other instances, unscrupulous sellers have sold vehicles to unwary buyers while not disclosing to the buyer that there is a recorded lien on the vehicle. In these instances both the new buyer as well as the lien holder become victims of fraud.
Titus County has arrested several individuals within the last year for felony charges related to illegal activities related to the sale of motor vehicles. In either case, defrauded victims may find recovery of any losses to be arduous.
Both potential buyers and sellers of motor vehicles, including all terrain vehicles, have certain obligations under Texas Law. If you have specific questions regarding the activity, please contact your local Department of Motor Vehicle (DMV) Office.
