The flu has arrived in East Texas and it is hitting hard!

There have been reports of surrounding schools that have closed campuses due to the number of students with flu or flu like symptoms. The TRMC emergency room and area primary care clinics are seeing more and more cases of flu right here in Mt. Pleasant!

The BEST way to prevent the flu is to get the flu vaccine every year. If you haven't had a flu shot yet, you can still get one through your primary care clinic or your local pharmacy. It is NOT too late! Research has found that the seasonal flu shot:

- Prevents severe flu in older adults and reduces admissions to the hospital

- Reduces hospitalization from serious flu complications by 60% in children

- Reduces hospital admissions in people with type 2 diabetes

These few steps can minimize the spread of flu viruses:

- Avoid close contact with those who are sick or other people if you are sick

- If you have flu-like symptoms, stay home for at least 24 hours after your fever has disappeared. (Don’t send your kids to school sick.)

- Regularly was your hands with soap and water

- Clean and disinfect surfaces that people come into contact with

- Cover your nose and mouth when sneezing and coughing
