The American Legion in Mount Pleasant
and the 1st District of the State of Texas announces it will be
sponsoring a Veterans Benefit Seminar/Fair, on Wednesday, Nov. 7, at the Titus
County Civic Center in Mount Pleasant from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Commander of the Mount Pleasant Post Bob
Hourahan, a U.S. Air Force veteran states "this event is open to all veterans
regardless of the time of service and the veteran does not have to be a member
of any veterans organization".
Commander Hourahan continued "the
founding of The American Legion was when the veterans of WWI saw how many Veterans
coming home from Europe needed assistance from the many different types of
wounds or problems brought on by war. So, the First Pillar of The American
Legion foundation of support to America was established".
The Event Coordinator, Bobby Baker of
the First District, said currently over 40 different agencies will be attending
which provide some type of service to veterans or the family of a Veteran.
The Veterans Administration, Texas Veterans
Commission, Texas Veterans Land Board and Texas Workforce Solutions are some of
the national and state agencies attending. There will be many local or area agencies
also in attendance, including Titus Regional Medical Center, Walgreens Pharmacy
will provide flu shots for free to qualified veterans and anyone else with
qualifying insurance, Area colleges will have veteran representatives, several
agencies will discuss benefits on mental health, aging, financial assistance
and services to assist veterans with special needs.
Baker added, "We should be able to
assist with many different types of iSSUPS and includes filing a disability
claim with the VA".
Commander Hourahan stated "The
American Legion is made up of honorably discharged veterans of seven wartime
periods - World War II, Korea War, Vietnam War, Lebanon/Grenada, Panama, and
the Persian Gulf (Since the US Congress has not established an ending date of
hostilities, all military personnel who have served on active duty for any
period since August 2, 1990 are eligible).
The American Legion has consistently
been the largest and most influential veterans' organization in this country,
since its founding in 1919, and today has nearly 2,000,000 men and women
supporting its membership ranks.
After almost 100 years, its members are
still serving America and its veterans.
