As we move into summer, many of us are looking forward to spending time outdoors. Whether you visit the lake or stroll through the outdoor classic car show, it is vital to protect your skin. Sun protection is not all about anti-aging and avoiding wrinkles. To ensure overall wellness, it is important to know your skin and be aware of any changes.
Remember the following acronym, ABCDE:
ASYMMETRY – The majority of benign moles or spots are symmetrical. A quick tip is to imagine a line through the middle of the mole. If the sides do not match, then a clinical skin exam may be warranted
BORDERS – Notice any uneven, irregular, or notched borders
COLOR – Normal spots are usually one color. Be cautious of any spots with many colors. Be cautious of skin lesions where color is varied from one area to another. Be aware of shades of tan, black, brown, white, red or blue
DIAMETER – Concerning spots and moles tend to be greater than 6mm (about the size of a pencil eraser). They can be smaller, but suspicious moles tend to be larger than ¼ in
EVOLVING – If a spot you’ve had suddenly starts changing color, shape, size, itches, or bleeds, you should obtain a clinical skin exam
ANYTHING NEW – Remember, anything new is the key. Notice changes in your skin. Moles are normal, but be conscious if you see a new one after age 40.
