On Saturday Evening, June 23rd, 2018, Titus County Sheriff's Deputies received a theft report from a resident on County Road 2120 who had returned to home discovering some property had been stolen. After deputies began to investigate the theft, it was discovered that the suspects had apparently gone onto another property in the area and committed another theft.
Surveillance camera footage helped provide enough evidence that deputies were able to piece together a trail that led to the suspect vehicle. Sunday morning, Titus County Deputies located the suspect vehicle and were able to confirm that it was the one they were looking for.
After locating the suspect vehicle along with all of the stolen items in the front yard of a residence on the 600 Block of West 10th, St. in Mount Pleasant, deputies located the resident, 54 year old Gaylon Newton. Finding Newton in possession of stolen property from two separate locations, Newton was arrested for Theft of Aluminum and Theft of Property having two or more prior convictions for theft. Each offense is a State Jail Felony. Deputies booked Newton into the Titus County Jail where he awaits arraignment.
Titus County Sheriff’s Office frequently makes a point of recommending that residents take advantage of a wide selection of relatively inexpensive surveillance cameras at their disposal today. Residents do not necessarily have to have an elaborate or costly system to document persons going onto their property with a little effort and planning. Had no such camera footage been available in this case, it might have taken much longer to solve or quite possibly, m
