Swimsuit, check. sunglasses, check. Sunscreen

How important is sunscreen on your daily checklist? As we dive into the summer months, there is no better time to talk about the importance of wearing sunscreen and protecting your skin from the harsh sun rays.

It is important to not only wear sunscreen but the right kind of sunscreen. If you spend a lot of time outside, choose a strong water-resistant sunscreen. Water resistant sunscreens are good to use during warm temperatures and during sports as they don’t run into the eyes when you sweat.

To make sure you are getting the full benefit of the sunscreen, you must apply 1oz and apply 30 minutes before going out in the sun.₃ Remember to reapply sunscreen every two hours or after exposure to water.

Make sure your sunscreen offers UVB and UVA protection. Some recommend products with SPF no lower than 30 and no higher than 50. Look for products with the ingredients zinc oxide, titanium dioxide, avobenzone, ecamsule, and oxybenzone. Also, look for words Multi-Spectrum or Broad Spectrum as they offer UVA and UVB protection.

We can't preach the importance of sunscreen without also warning about the dangers of indoor tanning. Indoor tanning, or tanning beds, exposes you to both types of rays – UVA and UVB which damage the skin and can result in cancer.₆ Indoor tanning can also lead to cataracts and cancers of the eyes. In fact, it is so important to avoid indoor tanning, some states banned indoor tanning for those under the age of 18.
