Commissioner Al Riddle reports

At the 10/30/2017 Commissioners meeting the Court permitted the Maintenance Barn to sign an agreement to pay a software company $364.00 A MONTH to keep a record of what the mechanic did to a vehicle or piece of equipment. This decision was based on the request of a new mechanic (just hired) and the road engineer.
This will require a $25-per-hour (plus benefits) mechanic to enter the data (parts, time, price, etc.) into the computer from the work order.

We do not have a fleet or enough of the same type vehicles that this program is designed to track an entire fleet of vehicles. Remember, too, that we just increased our other mechanic and new mechanic’s pay by $5-per-hour! For clerical work???
I opposed because the mechanics do not perform preventive maintenance the equipment. The road hands do this work. I opposed this because the equipment we use is “one-of-a-kind” in most cases and we deal with the manufacturer or dealer when problems occur, other than routine maintenance. Precinct one employees performed preventive maintenance on equipment and recorded the date and mileage.
They greased, cleaned daily and changed air filters as needed. I believe that the other precincts did the same. The newspaper reported that we bought the program! We did not BUY this program - another company owns it and we just get the use of it.
There are similar programs that we could have bought and I suggested that we look at some more programs, but the decision had already been made by the other commissioners.
The VOTE was 4 in favor of signing an agreement for one year to spend this money on a monthly basis! I was the single VOTE of ‘NO’!
