Jorge Hernandez tabbed as SAC Men's Cross Country Elite 20 winner

ROCK HILL, S.C. – Lincoln Memorial University junior Jorge Hernandez has been tabbed as the 2017 South Atlantic Conference Men's Cross Country Elite 20 winner, it was announced by the league office on Saturday.

The Elite 20 award honors the student-athlete with the highest cumulative grade-point average based on a minimum of 48 credit hours among all participants competing at the final site of each of the SAC's 20 team championship sports.

A native of Mount Pleasant, Texas, Hernandez carries a nearly perfect 3.93 grade-point average as a business management major.

During the 2016 campaign, Hernandez, then a sophomore, led the Railsplitters to an eighth-place finish at the NCAA Division II Southeast Regional Championship, which represents the highest finish in that event in program history. Hernandez was at the front of the pack for Lincoln Memorial and recorded the program's highest individual finish in that race with a 23rd-place run to earn All-Southeast Region merits.

This season, Hernandez led Lincoln Memorial in two of the team's four races, highlighted by a ninth-place finish at the Fast Cats Classic in the regular-season finale. He helped the Railsplitters take fourth place at Saturday's SAC Championship and earned the third All-SAC nod of his career with a 14th-place performance.

Hernandez is Lincoln Memorial's second Elite 20 winner in as many years as women's volleyball player Erica Whiteaker received the honor in 2016.

Lincoln Memorial University (LMU) is a private four-year co-educational liberal arts college located in Harrogate, Tennessee, United States. LMU's 1,000-acre campus borders on Cumberland Gap National Historical Park. LMU is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS).
