Two people were killed and 18 students transported to local hospitals after an 18-wheeler struck a Mt. Pleasant ISD bus carrying the boys high school track team late Thursday night.
The students were returning from a track meet in Paris and the bus was traveling along Highway 271, one mile south of Talco when an 18-wheeler truck swerved into its lane.
The bus swerved to avoid the truck, avoiding a head-on collision. After being side-swiped it rolled over at approximately 10:45 p.m. An assistant coach for a girls track team was one of two people killed in the crash. She was driving a vehicle behind the bus when the accident occurred. The driver of the 18-wheeler was also killed in the crash.
Eighteen of the 32 students on the bus were transported to area hospitals. At least one of the students was reported to have serious injuries and was taken by air ambulance.
The boys track team assistant coach was driving the bus at the time and is listed n critical condition.
