MPPD offers new program to help drivers from having to pay a fine.

The Mount Pleasant Police Department -  in conjunction with the Texas Department of Transportation (TXDOT) - is now offering a Child Safety Seat course to drivers who receive a citation for an unrestrained child. The department just had our first class for 12 cited drivers.

After receiving a citation for an unrestrained child, the violator has to go to the municipal court. There they are given a choice to either pay a fine or attend a Child Safety Seat course. Future attendees pay a $25 administrative fee to the court. At the course the parent must bring the child who was in the car with them at the time they were cited.

The training educates both the parent and child on the importance of a child safety seat. It also allows the trainers to properly fit the child in a proper safety seat. Attendees are shown how to properly install a safety seat and then the parent has to demonstrate how to install  the seat themselves. The entire course time for education and training is about two hours.

Many who participate either have a child safety seat that needs to be replaced or do not have one at all. The 12 who attended the course left with a new child safety seat provided for free.

The Texas Department of Transportation provided the child safety seats through a grant program to MPPD.

The MPPD's goal is to get compliance and educate our pubic in order to protect children.
We hope drivers who receive a citation for an unrestrained child attend our future courses.
