Long-time local educator passes away

Arthur “Butch” Skelton, 79, of Mt. Pleasant  passed away on Wednesday, February 8, 2017 in Tyler. Funeral Services will be held on Saturday, February 11, 2017 at 11:00 A.M. at the Curry-Welborn Funeral Home with Bro. Dwight Sharp and Jerry Mark Jacobs officiating. Interment will follow at the Gladewater Cemetery in Mt. Pleasant.

Visitation will be held on Friday, February 10, 2017 from 6:00 to 8:00 P.M. at the funeral home.

Skelton was born on August 26, 1937 in Mt. Pleasant to Arthur and Alma McCauley Skelton. He was a retired educator, and he spent four years teaching in Mineola and 26 for the Chapel Hill ISD, He retired in December 2014; his last position was as assistant elementary principal.

He was a member of the Choctaw Baptist Church.

Skelton is survived by his sister, Marie Jacobs of Houston and his brother Walter Joe Skelton of Mt. Pleasant, as well as numerous nieces and nephews, great nieces and nephews and great-great nieces and nephews.

He is also survived by his church family and his family at the Chapel Hill ISD.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Arthur and Alma Skelton and a brother William “Dean” Skelton.

Memorials can be made to the Choctaw Baptist Church Youth Funds in his honor.
