Suicidal subject taken into custody in Mount Pleasant Municipal Court Lobby

A distraught Mount Pleasant resident came into the Mount Pleasant Municipal Court lobby Thursday, May 26,  just after 1 p.m.. While court employees were talking with the man he pulled a razor blade knife from a backpack and attempt to hurt himself.

Several witnesses in the lobby reacted. Twenty-one year old Army Reservist Oscar Flores from Athens Georgia grabbed hold of the suicidal subject and forcibly restrained him.

At the same time two other witnesses in the lobby, identified as 44 year old Maria Ramirez Garrett of Athens Georgia and 22 year old Alicia Ramirez of Mount Pleasant, held onto the subject's hand with the knife, preventing him from cutting himself or others.

Officers from inside the police department next door responded and took the subject into custody. The subject had not had any legal issues or business with the court. It is unknown why he chose to go into the court lobby. The subject - whose identity is not being released - was transported to Titus Regional Medical Center for a mental evaluation.

Police Chief Wayne Isbell said "These three heroes took quick action at risk to themselves in order to save a life. Please join the Mount Pleasant Police Department in commending these individuals."
