They'r-r-r-e Back! Alcohol proponents plan another wet/dry vote

People were out this weekend in local stores collecting signatures to put another wet/dry election on the ballot this fall. The card shown above was being handed out to potential voters. City Manager Mike Ahrens confirmed that plans are underway for a fall wet/dry referendum.

This year's effort apparently is being run by the same outfit that made last year's push and wasted hundreds of thousands of dollars from Walmart and Brookshires - Austin-based Texas Petition Strategies.

Last year, Proposition 1 proposing the legal sale of beer and wine for off-premise consumption lost  with 774 votes against (50.26 percent of the votes); 766 votes for (49.74 percent).

Proposition 2 proposing the legal sale of mixed beverages in restaurants by food and beverage certificate holders only passed with 804 votes for (53.46 percent); 700 against (46.54 percent). Diners in Mount Pleasant restaurants now do not need to have a private club membership to have alcohol - including cocktails - with their meals.

It's irritating that the same bunch of greedy community-wreckers want a return bout, and this effort is likely to backfire. Mount Pleasant voters resent being bullied by avaricious businesses that want to adorn local retail locations with walls and pyramids of beer and wine.

Let's beat them again, harder than ever!
