Long-time civic leader Jack Hooker passes away; funeral on Sunday

Jack Hooker was born February 13, 1937, to Paul Jackson Hooker and Mamie Lee McLarty Hooker in Fort Worth, Texas. “Jack” passed away from complications of Bulbar ALS on February 3, 2016.

 He graduated from Carter Riverside High School in 1955, attended East Texas Teachers College, later known as East Texas University and Texas A&M. He received a BS in Business in 1959 and MS in Agriculture in 1961. Jack worked for IMC, Texarkana, TX., Geigy Chemicals. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, member of the Historical Society and Titus County Historical Preservation Society and was a member of the First Baptist Church.

He is survived by Jean, his wife of 49 years, daughters and son-in-law’s, Jayle Hooker Heitschmidt and Bruce Blaylock of Kahola Lake, KS., Jeri Hooker Cope and Steven of Joplin, MO., Jackie Miller-Sawyer and Tom of Coral Gables, FL., and Jana Hooker Dougherty and Robert of Mount Pleasant, TX; eight grandchildren, Paul, Stefanie and AnnaLee Cope, Allison and Dalton Miller, Alixander Cooper, Joshua and Andrew Dougherty; cousins, Sheryl Mahaney and Linda Scott.

“Jack” was an avid woodworker, a dedicated genealogist, and an enthusiastic “McGuyver” who would rather spend $50.00 repairing a $2.00 part so he wouldn’t have to buy another one. He and the What-A-Burger Coffee Group solved many problems and wasted a lot of napkins.

He loved his family, cows, workshop, and land where he supervised the building of his and Jean’s home. His motto was “is you can read it, you can make it.”

During his daughters growing up years, Jack mentored his oldest daughter while getting her Lifeguard’s Certification. After moving to Kansas, the daughters became interested in 4-H, Horse Showing, showing animals at the County Fair and helped with traveling to and from “Little Britches Rodeos and Kansas St. High School Rodeos.” Jack served as the National Little Britches President, Finals Chairman for National Little Britches and on the board of directors.

Jack was preceded in death by his parents and J Hugh and Winnie Smith, his father and mother-in-law. Visitation will be held at Bates-Cooper-Sloan Funeral Home on Sunday from 1:00 to 1:45 PM with graveside services by Dr. Clint Davis, Pastor will be held at Jones Chapel Cemetery at 2 PM. Pallbearers are David Fillebrown, David Bynum, Danny Dunn, Danny Turrentine, Lonnie Hedges, Ernie McAnally and Bill Priefert; honorary pallbearers will be the What-A-Burger Coffee Bunch.
