Long-time businessman and civic leader Joe Buford passes away

Joe Buford, 91, one of the last of a generation of Mount Pleasant businessmen who came to prominence after World War II, passed away Monday, Feb. 15, 2016.

A proud Aggie and World War II veteran, Buford opened his namesake insurance agency in Mount Pleasant in 1948. He was known for being a long-time member of the local Lions Club, joining in 1949 and serving as president in 1952-53.

He supported Mount Pleasant youth sports, and was one of the most prominent members of the Catholic church in the city.

In the above photo, taken in 1956, Buford leads fellow Lions in a community fund raising stunt, pulling a wagon across the downtown square; the riders Bird Old, Jr. and Charles Tucker, while Gabe Abdner and Winston Ward are pushing.
