Sheriff offers burglary prevention tips

The Titus County Sheriff's Office notes that the next seven days are prime time for early morning residential burglaries, from 6:00 a.m. until mid afternoon. "These days and times have historically been an active time for residential burglars," according to Sheriff Tim Ingram.

"Titus County has had a very uneventful season thus far, comparatively speaking, but the next several days could be significant. The typical target is a well kept modern home. One that has the appearance that the family works days, leaves early, and have kids that are gone to school.

"More at risks are homes that are somewhat secluded from view of neighbors. Burglars typically pass up a driveways that are gated or otherwise controlled because they want to park close to load up and leave quick.

"The most common motto of the house burglar intent on stealing your property is to knock on the front door, maybe even the back door to verify that no one is home; they do not want to have an encounter with an angry homeowner. If someone answers the door, they will make up a reason to be knocking on the wrong door and will leave in nearly all cases.

"If you observed someone whom you do not recognize knocking on the door, it is also your right to not answer the door but you should be readily prepared to defend yourself if a burglar forces entry into your home. There is nothing wrong with calling 911 for what seems like only a suspicious person knocking on the front door.

"I strongly urge everyone who reads this to keep a game couple of game cameras in place covering vehicle access, and maybe one in the front and back yard. Take a moment to take digital photos of items such as guns, flat screens laptop computers, and get a good shot of the serial number.

:It is frustrating for us to find a room full of what we believe to be stolen televisions or guns that we know are stolen but we just can't prove it. In those cases, we must leave the suspicious property at a burglars residence and you can bet we will not get a chance to see that property ever again. If you expensive jewelry, take photos of each piece from several angles and write some notes regarding any unique things about it.

"Encourage your neighbors to be very nosy and reciprocate the courtesy. Of utmost importance, if someone, anyone knocks on your door during daylight hours and are looking for some other name or family, write down a detail description, of them, their vehicle, License Plate number etc. and by all means, call it in as a suspicious person or vehicle. It will not inconvenience the authorities at all and you may well be helping solve a crime before it has happened or better still, you may be preventing a crime.

"This is a good practice throughout the year but especially during the Christmas Season," concluded Ingram.
