City Council accepts Heavner resignation

The Mount Pleasant City Council is down to three members – and a mayor - as on Tuesday night it formally accepted the resignation of Place 5 member Brian Heavner.

The vote was 2-1 with council members Tim Dale and Jerry Walker in favor of accepting Heavner's resignation and Sherri Spruill opposed.

Place 3 member Michael McGahee resigned in May after a 3-2 vote to terminate City Manager Mike Ahrens. Both McGahee and Heaver were the council members who voted against the termination.

The special election to fill McGahee's seat had already been called for Nov. 5. The council at the Tuesday night special called meeting also ordered a Nov. 5 special election for Heavner’s seat.

Both Heavner and McGahee were first elected in 2016 and reelected last year. It is unclear at this time whether the two special elections can be combined on one ballot.

Candidates in the special elections will need the signatures of 26 registered voters to get on the balloty.
