Saturday morning came early, especially after a long Christmas break. With school only a few short days away, the Tigers/Lady Tigers Powerlifting Team finished up their holiday workouts and traveled to Lindale for their first meet of the season.
For the Tigers, 5 returning Letterman, and for the Lady Tigers, 2 returning Letterman lead the way for a host of new power-lifters competing in what would be a hectic but exhilarating day.
Daniel Landaverde (Senior) lead the way for the boys with a 2nd place finish in the 132 class. Totaling 900 lbs for the day, Landaverde has improved upon last years total do give him a huge start for this year. With his Saturday total, he finds himself ranked #1 in the 132 class in Region 3 Division 1. Also competing in the 132 class, David Nava (Soph), a first year lifter, came away with a 5th place finish, putting him in 4th place in the Region.
In the 148 class, first year lifter Alex Vaseleck (Junior) finished a strong 10th in a competitive weight class.
In the 165 class, Jesus Perez (Senior) had a strong showing finishing 3rd while first year lifter Omar Ramirez (Soph) finished 13th.
In the 198 class, Jonathan Woods (Junior) made a strong showing after moving up in weight classes by finishing 4th overall.
In the 220 class, Juan Soto (Soph) finished 6th in a very tough division.
In the 242 class, first year lifter George Lias (Soph) came away with a 2nd place finish stunning the veterans in his weight class.
The 275 class lifters showed great promise with 1st timer Jashon Pogue (Junior) leading the way with a 5th place finish only edging out his teammate Ivan Elizando (Junior) who took 6th.
Rounding out the Boys division in the SHW class was Blake Denson (Junior) bringing home 4th place.
All total, the Tigers brought home 7 medals and a 5th place Team finish overall.
Leading the way for the Lady Tigers was Molli Dorsey (Senior). Dorsey placed 10th in the State Meet in 2017 and began 2018 with a bang, placing 2nd overall in the 259 class.
Following in her footsteps in the 259 class, rookie Camille Cantu (Frosh) brought home a 4th place finish.
In the 220 class, rookie Stephanie Gonzalez (Senior) grabbed a 4th place finish.
In the highly competitive 165 class, Brooklyn Mata (Senior) came up with an 11th place finish.
In the 148 class, sisters Kylie Hedge (Frosh) and Alexis Saldivar (Senior) both rookies, placed 12th and 13th respectively.
Rounding out the Lady Tigers were rookie Keren Mendoza (Senior) who brought home 6th place in a fierce competition which came down to the last lift, and Joanna Sandavol (Junior) who brought home 7th place.
All total, the Lady Tigers brought home 3 medals, 2 of which brought home by first time lifters.
