MPHS Calculator Applications Team Wins State UIL

The Mount Pleasant High School Calculator Application and Math Teams went to the State UIL contest at the University of Texas at Austin last weekend. They came home with 1st place in the State in Calculator Applications and 2nd in State in Math.

The Calculator Applications team of Carlos Barboza, Daniel Hernandez, Husban Shahid and Sanum Shahid beat second place team Wisdom High School from Houston by 56 points. Husban Shahid earned 5th place individually and medaled in the event while Daniel Hernandez placed 7th.

The Math team of Jose Liera, Daniel Hernandez, David Barboza, and Husban Shahid trailed first place team Highland Park by 52 points but beat third place team Lubbock High School by 132 points. Jose Liera placed 1st and Daniel Hernandez tied for 4th place individually. Both received individual medals as well as the 2nd place team medal.

“We are so proud of the accomplishments of these students and their coach Andy Speir,” said MPISD Director of Communication Dr. Judi Saxton. “Making it to state was their goal from the beginning of the school year. I think they surpassed that goal! To take a 1st and a 2nd place at State against some of the top 5A schools in the state is impressive. What is equally impressive is that two of these students, Daniel Hernandez and Husban Shahid compete on both teams. We congratulate them.”
