Lady Tigers softball plays for district championship
The Lady Tiger varsity softball team has scratched, clawed and fought their way right into the District 16-5A Championship. The Lady Tigers - who are 22-7 on the season - picked up a big 5-4 win on the road over #7 ranked Texas High Tuesday night in Texarkana.
With the win, MP moved into a three-way tie for the top spot with a final district game scheduled for Friday at home versus Sulphur Springs. The Lady Tigers, Sulphur Springs and Texas High all have a 9-2 district mark. A Lady Tiger win over I-30 rival Sulphur Springs will clinch at least a share of the District Title.
In the win over Texas High, the Lady Tigers jumped out to a 4-0 advantage in their first at bat. With two outs and a runner on first, the Lady Tigers’ took advantage of three free passes to Kamille Gill, Bree Smallwood and Pinky Green. Junior catcher Brooke Smallwood launched a 2-2 offering to the left field gap, clearing the bases for a 4-0 lead.
MP added a lone run in the third, as Jordan Dickerson blasted her 6th homerun in district play to give the Lady Tigers a 5-0 lead. Despite many efforts from Texas High’s offensive attack, the Lady Tigers played excellent defense all night long denying scoring chances.
Sophomore pitcher Averie Ayers picked up the win inside the circle for the Lady Tigers. She pitched a complete game allowing four runs on eight hits and fanned seven.
The Lady Tigers, who have clinched a playoff spot, will host Sulphur Springs on Friday for Senior Night. The Junior Varsity game is scheduled to begin at 4:30 pm and the Varsity will start at 6:00. Prior to the varsity game, the Lady Tigers will honor lone senior Bree Smallwood. Please make plans to come join us!!!
