Mount Pleasant says farewell to Jim Mitchell

Hundreds of people gathered in the sanctuary of St. Andrew's United Methodist Church Friday afternoon to say farewell for James R. "Jim" Mitchell, Mount Pleasant's most cheerful and best known centenarian.

Mitchell, who turned 100 on July 18, 2016, lived the last nine months of his life at Mount Pleasant Assisted Living, which is next door to St. Andrew's Church. For many years Mitchell would visit a different church every Sunday, but as his daughter Rev. Penny Mitchell explained, he never had a formal church home in recent years, and so St. Andrew'd adopted him.

Rev. Mitchell, who is the pastor at the Pilot Point United Methodist Church, gave the sermon for her father at the funeral, which started at 2 p.m. with a rendition of "When the Saints Go Marching in" as the many Mitchell family members entered the sanctuary.

In addition to the usual floral sprays, Mitchell's coffin was adorned with, among other things, his Boy Scout merit badge sash as well as his well-known "invisible dog".

Rev. Mitchell said her father, who became an Eagle Scout when he was a teenager, lived his life according to the precepts contained in the Scout Oath and Scout Law.

Adults and scouts from both Troops 101 and 209 were there to give the Scout Oath and Law during the ceremony.

St. Andrew's pastor Rev. Kristin Bogart greeted the many people in attendance. CrystalChandler gave a special rendition of "Take Me Home, Precious Lord".

Witnesses included family members and Scott Glover of the Mid-America Flight Museum.

Pallbearers included Robby McCraw, Noah McCraw, Alan Mitchell, Neal Dennehy and Andrew Nicholson. Honorary pallbearers were Glover, Cory Sanders, Bret Webster, Amro Ibrahim, and the members of Troops 101 and 209.

Burial followed in the Nevill's Chapel Cemetery.

The family asks that memorials be made to the Boy Scouts of America, Troop 101, P.O. Box 1420, Mount Pleasant, Tx. 75456.
