Distracted driving enforcement begins in Mount Pleasant

In August 2016 the City of Mount Pleasant passed an ordinance making it illegal to view, send or type text messages, read or use apps and play games while driving.

The ban is not limited to cell phones. The use of portable electronic devices to view, send, or compose an electronic message or any other application software while operating a motor vehicle on a public road is also prohibited. This includes using laptops, tablets and pagers.

Drivers will still be able to call, answer and talk on the phone. GPS navigation is also permissible, as long as the driver is not typing in an address while driving. Voice applications for cell phones and GPS devices are also permitted while driving.

Officers have been warning drivers, the police department has done a media campaign, both local and area news outlets have done media stories on the law and street signage has been posted warning drivers of the ordinance violation.

Please don’t text and drive. We want everyone to stay safe.
