Sheriff's Dept. arrests registered sex offender

On Friday, October 16, 2015, Sergeant Aaron Baxter and Deputy Matt Cooper were patrolling on FM 2348 North. As they turned east bound onto Highway 49, from FM 2348 they observed a truck stopped at the red light on Highway 49. The deputies observed the truck to be displaying to different registrations, which is a traffic violation.

Deputies initiated a traffic stop on the vehicle on Highway 49 and made contact with the operator identified as Clinton Ray Barber, age 56, from Mount Pleasant. Deputies observed Barber to be extremely nervous during the traffic stop which furthered the investigation.

Deputies soon learned that Barber is a registered sex offender. During questioning, it was found that Barber might not have been registering properly as he is required to do by state law being he is a registered sex offender. As the investigation continued Barber was found to have a glass pipe in his possession along with suspected methamphetamine.

Deputies arrested Clinton Barber for Possession of a Controlled Substance Penalty Group 1 >=1 gram < 4 grams and transported him to the Titus County Jail.

Barber remained in jail over the weekend and on Monday the Titus County Sheriff’s Office registered sex offender investigator Sergeant Wildey completed his investigation. Barber was then arrested for Failure to Comply with Registration Requirements.

Both charges are classified as a 3rd degree felony. An individual adjudged guilty of a felony of the third degree shall be punished by imprisonment in the Texas Department of Criminal Justice for any term of not more than 10 years or less than 2 years and in addition to imprisonment may be punished by a fine not to exceed $10,000.
