County Commissioners Monday morning approved contributing $1,832 towards costs related to the city’s new communications tower at the county fairgrounds.

City Manager Mike Ahrens explained the costs are for relocating radio “repeaters” to the new tower.

“They are all being relocated,” said Ahrens. The new tower was built by Verizon.

There are six different county organizations with radio repeaters on the tower – Titus Regional Medical Center with four channels, Titus County with two, and the City of Mount Pleasant, the Police Department, Fire Department and Sheriff’s Office with one each.

The cost of relocating each repeater is $916, said Ahrens, so the county’s share is $1,832.

In addition to the new tower, located behind the civic center and the fire station, a small new concrete building has been built to house the equipment on the ground.

This is a considerable improvement since the previous storage building “was made from the back of a U-Haul trailer,” said Ahrens.
